How to Create the BEST Pilates Practice

I’ve been teaching Pilates for a while, and the people with the best results and experience are those engaged in their practice. Here’s a secret — I do my job WAY better when you advocate for yourself. When you walk through my studio, it’s about YOU! That means telling me your expectations and what you like and don’t like. It also means trusting in the process and understanding that we’re running a marathon, not a sprint. Your results will be slow and steady, but spectacular and transforming. Remember that together, you and I, will transform your body and enhance your quality of life. Therefore, I want to spill the tea on how you can best approach your practice, advocate for yourself, and create the best Pilates experience:

  1. Determine your goals — Once you’ve established your goals, I can better customize your practice.
  2. Don’t be afraid to set short-term and long-term goals — Rome wasn’t built in a day.
  3. Express your needs and areas of concern — I’m not a mind reader (although I wish I could). Feel free to ask for slow or intense sessions, tell me what’s hurting, or ask questions that are on your mind.
  4. Trust me — I have your best interest at heart. I only suggest areas to work on or give certain corrections that will help you reach and accomplish your goals.
  5. Push yourself — Know when to push through the burn. Pilates has intense stretches and exercises, that require you to push past your point of comfort.
  6. Adjust your choices — Outside of your Pilates sessions opt for healthy choices. That can mean walking the stairs instead of riding the elevator, sitting up tall while working on your computer, or reaching for your water instead of a soda.
  7. Use your Pilates practice to help you get back into your favorite active hobby.
  8. It’s okay to slow down — If you’re coming off an injury, it’s okay to take time and reset. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
  9. Do Pilates more than once a week.
  10. Breathe — Practice mindful breathing. It will help you relax and grow your Pilates practice outside of the studio.
  11. Give yourself grace — Sometimes life happens. We can’t control everything, so be kind to yourself.
