The Truth About Having a Routine

Here is the truth…

You need a routine. There is value in consistency and repetition. As the saying goes, humans are creatures of habit. Consider your Netflix pattern. Likely, you have seen one full series, at least two or more times. You find comfort in knowing the outcome of the television show and seek similar series that will satisfy your need for consistency. Nurse and encourage that humanistic urge for routine through creating and adding supplemental forms of exercise into your lifestyle. Throughout this article, I will discuss helpful ways to create maintainable exercise habits and the benefits of sustaining a routine.

…Be Authentic

Beyond people’s habitual nature, humans often seek opportunities for personal growth. This can be a major advantage or a large detriment. When creating a routine, it is important to have self-discipline and establish habits suitable to your lifestyle. People face burnout and disappointment when they are inauthentic to their personal needs of growth. First and foremost, know yourself and learn to love the routine you already have.

Every morning people follow the same pattern day after day and night after night. To create a new routine, be mindful of the habits you already established. Take me for example. My mornings are sacred. I wake up early to give myself time to enjoy the slow pace that mornings bring. Sometimes there is no need to go on a run or smash out a workout as the sun is rising. Know yourself and be authentic to your habits.

… Set Achievable Goals

In being authentic, understand bad habits and replace them with a small goal. My husband’s recent goal is to do daily pull-ups, push-ups, and planks. This takes him 10 minutes or less. As working adults, committing 10 minutes a day to exercise is both attainable and accessible. After his push-ups, I know my husband finishes feeling accomplished and strong.

…Enjoy a Hobby

Although, not every habit is a daily 10-minute workout. Sometimes creating a new habit is an itch that needs to be scratched. For instance, I signed up for a ballet class that meets once a week. I grew up dancing and that hour fills my cup. Make an effort to enjoy your hobbies. My advice is to book classes in advance. Making a commitment, to either a business or a friend, is the sure way to follow through.

Beginning a routine or adding to it, should not be unobtainable. The truth is that routines are important, but they do not have to be hard, boring, or time-consuming. Get involved in activities that are worth your time and that you genuinely love doing. Create and develop a routine that brings you comfort like your favorite Netflix show and keeps you watching the series over and over again.
